Travel Update: Greece drops EU biometric checks for UK travellers
Greece has confirmed it will not apply the new EU Entry/Exit System (EES) biometric checks to British travellers at its borders—for now. While the wider Schengen Area introduced fingerprint and facial recognition requirements for “third-country nationals” (including UK passport holders) from April 2026, Greece has opted out in a move designed to reduce airport delays and improve the arrival experience. This means no fingerprint registration or biometric scans when entering popular destinations like Corfu, Crete, or Rhodes.
The decision comes amid growing concerns about long queues and disruption at European borders following the EES rollout. By easing entry requirements, Greece is positioning itself as a smoother, more traveller-friendly gateway into Europe—especially important given the high number of UK visitors each year. For now, British travellers can expect a faster, more straightforward arrival, though rules may evolve as the system continues to develop across the EU.
