Strasbourg goes all-in at Christmas, with wooden chalets, elaborate decorations and the enormous tree in Place Kléber transforming its historic centre. Markets and festive displays spread across several squares, so this is somewhere to wander rather than rush between one or two headline sights.

✨ Amazing Fact: Strasbourg’s Christkindelsmärik dates back to 1570 — more than 450 years of Christmas market tradition.

💡 Make More of Your Trip: If you have an extra day, combine Strasbourg with Colmar. The two are connected by train and give you two very different Alsace Christmas experiences.

Vienna’s Christmas markets appear against some spectacular backdrops, from grand squares to palaces. Rathausplatz is the obvious starting point, but smaller markets are a big part of what makes Vienna worth more than a quick visit.

Start around Rathausplatz, then walk towards the smaller markets at Maria-Theresien-Platz and Spittelberg. You’ll experience completely different sides of Christmas in Vienna without wasting time crossing the city.

Prague’s Gothic towers, cobbled streets and enormous Christmas tree give Old Town Square one of Europe’s most dramatic festive settings. It’s particularly impressive once darkness falls and the historic centre lights up around the market.

🎒 Day Trip Potential: Early outbound and late return flights can make Prague possible in a day from selected UK airports, although we’d stay overnight if you can.

Don’t spend the whole trip at Old Town Square. Head to Náměstí Míru (Peace Square) for a smaller, more local-feeling festive market.

Medieval towers, cobbled lanes and wooden stalls make Tallinn’s Old Town look remarkably close to a real-life Christmas card. The historic centre is compact too, which means you can explore at a much slower pace than in some larger Christmas market cities.

✨ Fun Fact: Tallinn records a Christmas tree being displayed in Town Hall Square as far back as 1441 — although its claim to Europe’s first public Christmas tree is famously disputed by Riga.

📸 Don’t Rush Off: See Town Hall Square during the day, then return after dark when the lights completely change the atmosphere.

Half-timbered houses, canals and tiny cobbled streets give Colmar a Christmas setting that barely looks real. Rather than one enormous central market, the festive atmosphere spreads through the historic centre.

❤️ Air-Holiday Pick: Don’t choose between Colmar and Strasbourg. Combine both and use the regional train between them — the journey takes roughly half an hour.

📸 Take Your Time: Colmar’s appeal is as much about its decorated streets and buildings as the market stalls themselves, so leave room in your itinerary simply to wander.

Chocolate shops, medieval buildings, canals and Christmas lights make compact Bruges perfect for a short festive escape. Its walkable centre is a big advantage if you’ve only got a day to experience it.

Nuremberg’s famous Christkindlesmarkt fills the Hauptmarkt with traditional red-and-white stalls and centuries of festive tradition. This is one to choose if the traditional food, crafts and history of German Christmas markets are a major part of the appeal.

😋 Don’t Miss: Order Nürnberger Rostbratwurst the traditional way — three little sausages in a bread roll, known locally as Drei im Weggla.

🍪 Save Room: Nuremberg is also famous for Lebkuchen, so sausage followed by gingerbread seems like an entirely reasonable Christmas market lunch to us.

Budapest gives you atmospheric Christmas markets, spectacular architecture and a rather brilliant solution to cold December weather: its thermal baths. That makes it especially good if you want a winter city break rather than spending every waking hour at market stalls.

❤️ Air-Holiday Pick: Explore the Christmas market around St Stephen’s Basilica after dark, then book a thermal bath for the following morning. Christmas market tonight, steaming outdoor pool tomorrow.

💡 Make It a Break: We’d give Budapest at least two nights. There’s enough beyond the markets that squeezing everything into one day rather misses the point. Take a look at short breaks in Budapest.

Dresden’s Striezelmarkt isn’t simply another German Christmas market — it’s a piece of Christmas history. Traditional crafts and festive food sit alongside a city centre that makes this particularly appealing to anyone interested in where Europe’s Christmas market traditions came from.

🤯 Amazing Fact: First held in 1434, the Striezelmarkt is considered Germany’s oldest Christmas market. Its name comes from Striezel, an early form of the Christmas bread we now know as Stollen.

😋 Try This: Dresden is the place to try the real thing too — look out for Dresdner Christstollen while you’re exploring.

FAQs

Most traditional Christmas markets are free to enter, so you can wander around the stalls without buying a ticket. However, some larger festive attractions may charge for entry or for individual activities such as ice skating, rides, concerts or special events. Always check the individual event before travelling. Yes, it’s worth carrying a small amount of local currency even if you normally pay by card. Many Christmas market stalls accept cards or contactless payments, but smaller food, drink and craft stalls may still prefer cash.

Remember that not every European destination uses the euro, so check the local currency before you travel. A travel-friendly bank card such as Monzo can also make paying by card and keeping track of spending abroad easier.

For the full atmosphere, we’d choose late afternoon into evening. Arrive while it’s still light to explore the stalls, then stay as the Christmas lights come on. If shopping is your priority, mornings and weekdays can be quieter than evenings and weekends.

It varies considerably by destination, but expect to spend much more time outdoors than on a normal city break. Layers are your friend — think a cosy jumper, warm waterproof coat, gloves and comfortable weather-resistant shoes. You can also browse cosy clothing from OHS for some extra winter layers.

And don’t assume you’ll have snow — December can just as easily bring cold rain, so check the forecast before you pack.

Many gifts and packaged products are straightforward to bring home, but rules apply to certain food, plant and animal products entering Great Britain from abroad. If you’re planning to buy local cheeses, meats, plants or other food as gifts, check the current UK rules before buying them.

Leave a little spare room in your luggage and pack a soft tote or foldable bag for unexpected purchases. Wrap delicate decorations in clothing and keep particularly fragile items in your hand luggage where airline rules allow. If you’re flying with cabin baggage only, check size and liquid restrictions before buying larger gifts.
