Is Bran Castle really Dracula’s Castle?

This is probably the biggest surprise for first-time visitors. Despite its worldwide reputation, Bran Castle Transylvania wasn’t actually home to Count Dracula because, of course, Dracula never existed.

Bram Stoker created the famous vampire without ever visiting Romania, basing much of his novel on research and local folklore rather than personal experience. The castle also had very little connection to Vlad the Impaler, the Wallachian ruler often linked with Dracula. Historians believe he may have travelled through the area, but there is little evidence that Bran Castle was ever his home.

So why has the connection lasted?

Quite simply, the castle looks exactly how people imagine Dracula’s home should look. Perched high on a rocky hill with towers, narrow staircases and thick stone walls, it’s almost impossible not to think of vampires while exploring it.

Windows suddenly open onto spectacular views across the surrounding mountains, while quiet courtyards offer a chance to escape the crowds for a few minutes.

When should you visit?

Bran Castle is open throughout the year, and each season brings its own atmosphere.

Spring is ideal if you prefer quieter walks and mild temperatures, while summer offers long daylight hours and plenty of cafés and market stalls open around the village. Autumn is our favourite, as the surrounding forests turn shades of gold and orange, with Halloween events creating an unforgettable atmosphere. Winter can be magical too, especially after snowfall when the castle looks as though it’s been lifted straight from a Gothic fairy tale.

If photography is high on your list, arrive within the first hour after opening or during the final couple of hours before closing. You’ll usually enjoy quieter paths, softer light and much better views without the crowds.

The castle is usually open daily, typically from 9:00am to 6:00pm (with Mondays often opening later, around 12:00pm), although opening hours can vary slightly throughout the year and during special events such as Halloween.

October is especially busy during the weekends leading up to Halloween. For autumn colours and atmosphere with fewer crowds, consider late September or the first half of October.

How to get to Bran Castle

Most international visitors arrive via Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport, around a 2½-hour drive from Bran Castle. Brașov-Ghimbav Airport is much closer, typically around 35 to 45 minutes away by car, although flight options are more limited.

If you prefer not to drive, Romania’s rail network makes it easy to travel from Bucharest to Brașov. From there, buses and taxis connect Brașov with Bran Castle, making the train a convenient option for independent travellers. You can compare available rail journeys before travelling.

Guided day tours are a convenient choice if you’re staying in Bucharest or Brașov and would rather leave the transport and planning to someone else. Many combine Bran Castle with places such as Peleș Castle, Râșnov Fortress or Brașov.

Hiring a car is ideal if you’re planning to explore more of Transylvania. It gives you the freedom to stop at mountain viewpoints, discover traditional villages and visit several castles without being tied to a timetable. Driving in Transylvania is straightforward, and many of the region’s highlights are within an hour of Bran Castle, making it an excellent destination for a scenic road trip. Where should you stay?

One question people often ask is whether you can spend the night inside Bran Castle. Unfortunately, the answer is no. The good news is that you don’t need to. The village of Bran has plenty of welcoming guesthouses, boutique hotels and mountain lodges, many with beautiful views of the surrounding Carpathian Mountains. It’s a peaceful base if you’re looking for a quieter stay and want to arrive before the day-trippers.

For most visitors though, we’d actually recommend staying in nearby Brașov instead. Only around forty minutes away, Brașov offers a much wider choice of hotels, restaurants and cafés while making an ideal base for exploring the rest of Transylvania. You can comfortably visit Bran Castle, Râșnov Fortress and even Peleș Castle with many day trips easily available.

If you’re travelling during October, it’s worth booking accommodation well in advance as Bran and Brașov become especially popular around Halloween.

Making the most of your visit

Whether you’re joining a guided tour or exploring independently, don’t feel you have to rush. Bran Castle is best enjoyed at a relaxed pace, giving you time to explore its winding staircases, hidden passages and fascinating history before wandering through the village below.
