✈️🤔 Air-Holiday’s Most Asked Flight Questions

Because let’s face it — we’ve all asked these too!

Airport Wi-Fi? Usually free, not always fast — expect logins, ads, or time limits.

✈️ Want guaranteed decent Wi-Fi? Airport lounges include high-speed access (plus comfy seats, drinks, and snacks). You don’t need business class — just book ahead.

Onboard Wi-Fi? Some airlines give free messaging, others sell passes. Fine for emails, not Netflix.

🔒 Security tip: Avoid banking, passwords, or personal details on open Wi-Fi unless you use a VPN.

💡 For global travel, try Drimsim — one SIM in 190+ countries.
🎒 Staying in the UK/Europe? VOXI gives great plans and free EU roaming.

Top tip: Download playlists, shows, and maps before you go.

2 hours for short-haul, 3 for long-haul, and maybe a bit more if you’re the anxious type (we see you 🫣). Security queues and surprise loo queues take time! Airlines may close boarding gates up to 40 minutes before take-off.

⏳ Lounges only allow access 2–3 hours before departure — ideal timing for a stress-free start.

💡 Top Tip: Book a lounge in advance to swap queues for free drinks, snacks & Wi-Fi.

The golden rule? Never assume!

Rules vary by passport & destination. Some allow online applications, others need interviews.
✅ Always check official advice before booking.

Don’t forget, travel insurance may help if a visa is denied or delayed.

💡 Top Tip: Expedia often highlights entry rules when you book flights or packages — saving you a nasty surprise at the border.

These days, most airlines are cool with digital passes — just save it in your app wallet or take a screenshot. But don’t rely solely on signal or battery. We’ve seen (and been) that traveller at the front of the queue frantically trying to refresh their email. A printed backup is boring but brilliant — and sometimes easier. Trust us. ✨

💡 Top Tip: Many lounges offer free printing if you need a backup copy.

Whether you’re travelling with limited mobility, sensory sensitivities, a buggy, or something else — airlines and airports offer free assistance, and it can make a huge difference to your journey.

✅ This can include:

  • Getting through security and to your gate
  • Priority boarding or help getting on and off the aircraft
  • Access to buggy shuttles or wheelchair support
  • Assistance with baggage claim on arrival
  • Help with connections in larger or unfamiliar airports

🎯 Just make sure you request it at least 48 hours in advance — either when you book or by contacting the airline directly.

There’s no shame in asking — travel should be for everyone, and that includes a stress-free take-off and landing. Let the crew know if you’d like a little extra help getting seated or disembarking.

💡 Top Tip: If you’d like an even smoother start, you can also add a fast track pass — skipping long security queues makes a huge difference if you’re anxious, travelling with kids, or just want to keep things stress-free.

⚡ Liquids & gels rules vary — check your departure airport a few days before.
🔋 Power banks must go in cabin bags.
💊 Carry a copy of your prescriptions if you need medications.
✨ Fun fact: you can even bring a sports parachute!

💡 Top Tip: For the full guide, see our Cabin Bag Rules Blog. Want a smoother security experience? Add a fast-track pass to skip the queues.

With Expedia, you can compare loads of airlines in one go, filter by flexible or cancellable tickets, and even mix and match flights or plan multi-city adventures. You can also set price alerts, book now and pay later, and bundle hotels and extras for less stress.

💰 The best part? Every booking earns OneKey™ Rewards, which you can use not just on flights but also on Hotels.com and Vrbo stays — so today’s flight could help pay for tomorrow’s hotel. That’s why we power our flight, hotel, and package search — plus travel deals all in one place.

👟 Slip-on shoes — easier at security and comfier once you’re seated.
🧥 Pack a light jumper — flights get chilly.
🛏️ Bring a pillowcase — fill it with a jumper or scarf at the airport for an instant DIY pillow.
🧴 Moisturising face spray or lip balm — pressurised cabins dry you out faster than you realise.
👕 Spare top + wipes = fresh landing.

🥜 Avoid nut snacks — flights often ban them.
🍬 Werther’s Originals = snack + ear-pain hack.
🥤 Bring a fold-up water bottle — refill at fountains after security.

🎧 Noise-cancelling headphones = lifesaver.
📲 Screenshot boarding passes & hotel bookings.
📸 Take a photo of your parking spot or train platform before heading into the terminal — future you will be grateful.
🪫 Fully charged power bank — always keep it in your carry-on (never checked luggage).

💡 Top Tip: Little hacks add up — the comfier and calmer you are, the smoother your flight will feel.

Because airlines move faster than a boarding call at Gate 23. Fares change constantly depending on demand, season, competition, and how flexible your travel dates are.

For short-haul trips, the sweet spot is usually 4–6 weeks before departure, especially with budget airlines. Long-haul flights tend to be best booked 2–5 months ahead. Tuesdays and Sundays are often the cheapest days to book, while midweek flights (Tuesday–Thursday) are usually the cheapest to fly.

Last-minute holidays can be cheap too, but it’s always a gamble — unless you’re happy to grab a bag and go. (We’ve done it, and it can be brilliant!)

💡 Top Tip: Use Expedia’s Price Alert tool to track fare changes and lock in a bargain before it disappears.

Pre-book to dodge the dreaded middle seat. Extra legroom, window views, or sitting together is usually worth the small fee. Always check your ticket type — some fares already include seat selection, while others let you add it for a modest cost. Do the maths: sometimes upgrading your ticket level works out cheaper than paying for extras separately. Some airlines even let you bid for upgrades — meaning you could be sipping bubbly at 30,000 feet for a fraction of the price.

💡 Top Tip: Check seat maps on sites like SeatGuru before you book — they highlight the best and worst seats on your aircraft so you can choose wisely.

Ah yes — boarding psychology 101. The gate opens and suddenly everyone’s in a queue, even though first class hasn’t been called and the plane isn’t going anywhere for 45 minutes.

We get it — fear of missing out on overhead bin space is real. But here’s the truth:
✅ Your seat is guaranteed, even if you’re last to board.
❌ What’s not guaranteed? Overhead space for your bag if you’re late.

So don’t stress… but maybe don’t wander off for “just one more coffee” either.

Our advice:
📍 Stay nearby.
👀 Keep an eye on the screen.
💺 Let the stampede go first unless you’re in a rush or have a giant roller bag.

And if you want to avoid the overhead bin Olympics altogether? Pack light with an under-seat bag or add cabin bag priority (sometimes called Priority Boarding or Priority Seat + Bag) with your airline.

💡 Top Tip: Pack a collapsible tote bag 👜 — if bins are full, you can quickly pull essentials into a smaller bag to keep under the seat while your bigger case gets checked. We’ve got some cute options in our Air-Holiday Travel Shop too.

Basic tickets? Usually no.

Flexible fares? Much easier.

Expedia makes it simple by highlighting flights with free cancellation or no change fees, so you can filter for flexibility before you book. Whatever you choose, always book travel insurance — it’s your real safety net if plans change.

💡 Top Tip: If flexibility matters, look out for Expedia’s “Book Now, Pay Later” option — it locks in today’s price while giving you room to adjust your plans.
