✈️🤔 Air-Holiday’s Most Asked Flight Questions

(because yep, we’ve asked them too…)

Airport Wi-Fi? Usually yes — often free, but not always fast. You might need to sign in, watch an ad, or trade your email address for 30 minutes of internet bliss.

Onboard Wi-Fi? Some airlines offer free messaging, others sell internet passes by the hour or the megabyte. It’s fine for light browsing or email, but don’t expect high-speed streaming.

But a word to the wise: don’t check your bank account, enter passwords, or do anything personal over open public Wi-Fi unless you’re using a secure VPN.

💡 Want to stay connected without relying on dodgy networks? We love Drimsim — it’s a smart, flexible travel SIM that works in over 190 countries. Easy, secure, and ideal for digital nomads or meme lovers alike. Check them out here!

🎒 Staying mostly in the UK or Europe? Our friends at VOXI offer great roaming and at home deals — and if you use our referral, you’ll both get a little treat. Win-win! Sound good? Here’s the link.

Top tip: Download playlists, shows and maps at home.

We say: 2 hours early for short-haul, 3 for long-haul, and maybe a bit more if you’re the anxious type (we see you 🫣). Security queues and surprise loo queue’s take time! Airlines may close boarding gates up to 40 minutes before take-off!

We like to arrive around these times, crack on with bag drop and security then find a comfy spot in departures to grab a drink, meal deal and duty free!

The golden rule? Never assume you can just rock up at passport control with a smile. Some countries welcome you with open arms and no paperwork. Others? Not so much.

Visa rules depend on your citizenship, destination, and trip length. Some let you apply online, some demand in-person interviews.

Always check the official advice before you book — or risk your dream trip turning into a long walk back to check-in.

These days, most airlines are cool with digital passes — just save it in your app wallet or take a screenshot. But don’t rely solely on signal or battery. We’ve seen and been a travellers at the front of the queue frantically trying to refresh their email. A printed backup is boring but brilliant and sometimes easier!
Trust us. ✨

Whether you’re travelling with limited mobility, sensory sensitivities, a buggy, or something else — airlines and airports offer free assistance, and it can make a huge difference to your journey.

✅ This can include:

  • Getting through security and to your gate
  • Priority boarding or help getting on and off the aircraft
  • Access to buggy shuttles or wheelchair support
  • Assistance with baggage claim on arrival
  • Help with connections in larger or unfamiliar airports

🎯 Just make sure you request it at least 48 hours in advance — either when you book or by contacting the airline directly.

There’s no shame in asking — travel should be for everyone, and that includes a stress-free take-off and landing. Let the crew know if you’d like a little extra help getting seated or disembarking — they’re usually brilliant.

💡 Bonus tip: If you’re flying solo and nervous about navigating a new airport, some places even offer hidden disabilities lanyards or quiet spaces. It’s all about making travel smoother for every kind of adventurer.

There are changes afoot in some airports about the amount of liquids & gels you can take through security HOWEVER make sure you check the up-to-date rules for the airport a couple days before you fly, they are fluid 😉 and no pointy things. You can take Sports parachute according to the UK Gov’s website!

You MUST have power banks in your cabin bag, do not pack these in your checked bag!

Got meds? Get proof – copy of your prescription usually works.

It’s not always as straightforward as it seems. Sometimes, a return (round-trip) ticket is cheaper than booking a one-way — even if you only plan to use half of it. Weird, we know. ✈️

On the flip side, one-way flights can offer more flexibility, especially if you’re doing a multi-stop trip or flying into one city and out of another.

🧭 Planning something a bit adventurous? Tools like Expedia let you build custom itineraries across multiple airlines and destinations — perfect for your inner travel ninja.

💡 Tip from us: Compare both options. The savings (and freedom) might surprise you.

✈️Flights get chilly, so throw in a light jumper. You’ll thank us at 35,000 feet.

✈️Grab a fold up water bottle, free fountains in departures!

✈️ Pack a spare top and pants in your hand luggage, land fresh and without that coffee stain from navigating the onboard drinks manoeuvres! A small pack of wipes never hurt either. Remember that vacuum bags are your friend for all packing needs!

✈️Don’t buy anything with nuts in for the plane, a high number of flights have someone with an allergy which means your snack is staying in the bag!

✈️ Always bring snacks – Werther’s are our choice and work well if your ears hurt during take off / landing.

✈️🎧 Invest in wireless noise-cancelling headphones. Trust us on this!

✈️Choose the right seat for you, check out sites like SeatGuru

✈️💡 Screenshot everything – Boarding passes, hotel bookings, gate numbers, directions — don’t rely on airport Wi-Fi or 4G in a new country.

🛫 Why are flight prices so all over the place?

Because airlines move faster than a boarding call at Gate 23. Prices shift based on demand, season, airline competition, and how flexible your travel dates are.

💡Top tips from us:

  • Short-haul? Book around 4–6 weeks in advance, especially for budget carriers.
  • Long-haul? Aim for 2–5 months ahead for the best value.
  • Tuesdays and Sundays are often cheapest to book, but midweek flights (Tues–Thurs) tend to be cheaper to fly.
  • Chasing a deal? Expedia’s Price Alert tool can track fare changes and help you grab a bargain before it disappears.

Last-minute flights can be cheap, but it’s a gamble — unless you’re ready to drop everything and go (and hey, we’ve done that)

Most airlines let you pre-book seats for a small fee — especially handy if you want to avoid the dreaded middle seat between two strangers battling for the armrest. Some premium tickets include free seat selection, but with basic economy, it’s a bit of a seat roulette (and nobody wins when you’re next to the loo).

If you’re after extra legroom, a window seat for those views, or simply want to sit together as a group, we say: book early, pay the fee, and thank yourself later.

💡 Fancy an upgrade?
Some airlines now let you bid for upgrades — yep, like an auction. You’ll get an email a few days before your flight asking how much you’re willing to pay for business or premium economy. Offer too low and you stay in your current seat. Bid smart and you might just end up sipping bubbly at 30,000 feet without breaking the bank. Worth a try — especially if you like a bit of ✨ travel roulette.

Ah yes — boarding psychology 101. The gate opens and suddenly everyone’s in a queue, even though first class hasn’t been called and the plane isn’t going anywhere for 45 minutes.

We get it — fear of missing out on overhead bin space is real. But here’s the truth:

  • Your seat is guaranteed, even if you’re last to board.
  • What’s not guaranteed? Overhead space for your bag if you’re late.
  • So don’t stress… but maybe don’t wander off for “just one more coffee” either.

Our advice:
📍 Stay nearby.
👀 Keep an eye on the screen.
💺 Let the stampede go first unless you’re in a rush or have a giant roller bag.

And if you want to avoid the overhead bin Olympics altogether? Pack light for under seat storage only and add cabin bag priority with your airline. Worth every penny if it saves you from gate-side chaos and bag tagging drama.

Depends how fancy your fare was. Basic tickets are usually non-refundable or come with hefty change fees. We recommend Expedia for a reason – you’ll often find flights with free cancellation, “book now, pay later” options, and even flexible ticket filters you can toggle before checkout. Look out for flights marked “Free Cancellation” or “No Change Fees” — they give you peace of mind if plans go sideways.
